MCC USB-TC

The USB-TC is an 8-channel, 24-bit USB thermocouple device from MCC with 500 VDC isolation, built-in cold junction sensors and eight digital I/O lines, supporting types J, K, R, S, T, N, E and B. It reads 2 samples per second per channel and suits slow thermal tests such as ovens, chambers and burn-in racks.

Inputs, rate and isolation

The eight differential inputs feed four dual 24-bit sigma-delta converters. Each channel reads at 2 S/s, 16 S/s with all eight running, which is enough for temperature and rules the USB-TC out for fast voltage signals. Two on-board temperature sensors handle cold junction compensation, and the field wiring is isolated from the USB side to 500 VDC minimum, which helps when thermocouples touch grounded metal or powered equipment. The device runs from USB power. The thermocouple measurement guide covers grounding and CJC errors, and the thermocouple calculator converts millivolts to temperature for each type.

Windows, Linux and macOS support

On Windows, InstaCal handles setup, the Universal Library handles programming and DAQami logs data. On Linux and macOS, the USB-TC is in uldaq’s supported device list, so you can read temperatures from C or Python, though MCC provides no logging app there. DAQAtlas, which is in development, reads it through uldaq and includes a simulated USB-TC, so a thermal dashboard can be laid out before any thermocouples are wired. The list price at the time of writing is $430 from Digilent, and the USB-TEMP is the sibling model for RTDs and thermistors.

Questions

Does the MCC USB-TC work on a Mac?

Yes. MCC’s uldaq library supports the USB-TC on macOS and Linux. InstaCal and DAQami, MCC’s own tools, are Windows only.

How fast does the USB-TC sample?

2 samples per second per channel, or 16 S/s total with all eight thermocouple inputs in use.

Is the USB-TC isolated?

Yes. MCC specifies 500 VDC minimum isolation between the field wiring and the USB interface.
