MCC USB-1608G Series
The USB-1608G Series is MCC’s 16-bit multifunction USB DAQ line with 16 single-ended or 8 differential inputs. The USB-1608G samples at 250 kS/s, and the USB-1608GX-2AO samples at 500 kS/s and adds two 16-bit analog outputs. Lab and production test benches move to it when 12 bits is no longer enough.

USB-1608G, USB-1608GX and USB-1608GX-2AO
The USB-1608G samples at up to 250 kS/s and has no analog outputs. The USB-1608GX doubles that to 500 kS/s, and Digilent lists it as retired. The USB-1608GX-2AO keeps the 500 kS/s input and adds two 16-bit, ±10 V analog outputs that update at 250 kS/s per channel, or 500 kS/s on one channel. List prices at the time of writing are $479 for the USB-1608G and $959 for the USB-1608GX-2AO, and OEM board versions exist for both.
All three share one input stage: 16 single-ended or 8 differential channels, ±10, ±5, ±2 and ±1 V ranges selectable per channel, 8 digital I/O lines, two 32-bit event counters and one PWM timer. The sample rate is aggregate across the scan list, so 16 channels on a USB-1608G get about 15.6 kS/s each. The sample rate calculator does that division for any channel count. The inputs share one multiplexed converter, so a 16-channel scan reads each channel at a slightly different moment. For phase-aligned channels, look at the simultaneous-sampling USB-1808X.
Software support by operating system
On Windows you get InstaCal, the Universal Library, ULx for NI LabVIEW and DAQami. On Linux and macOS, uldaq supports every variant, including the later -2 hardware revisions of each model, but MCC offers no logging app there. DAQami for Mac compares the routes for Mac users. DAQAtlas, which is in development, runs these devices through uldaq with hardware-paced scans and includes the USB-1608GX-2AO as a simulated device.
Questions
What is the difference between the USB-1608G and USB-1608GX-2AO?
The USB-1608G samples at 250 kS/s with no analog outputs. The USB-1608GX-2AO samples at 500 kS/s and adds two 16-bit ±10 V analog outputs; the inputs are otherwise the same.
Does the USB-1608G work on a Mac?
Yes, through MCC’s uldaq library, which supports the USB-1608G, USB-1608GX and USB-1608GX-2AO on macOS and Linux. DAQami and InstaCal are Windows only.
Is 500 kS/s per channel on the USB-1608GX-2AO?
No. It is the aggregate rate for the multiplexed inputs, divided across the channels in the scan.
