LabJack U6

The LabJack U6 is a USB-only DAQ with 14 analog inputs, a programmable gain amplifier down to ±0.01 V, 16-bit resolution (24-bit on the U6-Pro), 20 digital I/O lines, two counters and four timers. It uses LabJack’s older UD driver family, and LabJack now recommends the T7 for new designs.

U6 and U6-Pro specs

The U6 lists at $445 and the U6-Pro at $490 at the time of writing. Both have 14 analog inputs with ±10, ±1, ±0.1 and ±0.01 V ranges, a 50 kS/s maximum stream rate, two 12-bit analog outputs, 20 digital I/O lines, two counters and four timers. The U6-Pro adds a 24-bit sigma-delta converter. The 50 kS/s figure holds only on the ±10 V range at resolution index 0 or 1. Higher gains and resolution settings take longer per conversion, so the maximum scan rate falls. The Mux80 board expands the U6 to 84 inputs. LabJack’s comparison page lists the U6 as active, with end of life expected around 2030.

LabJack U6 on macOS and Linux

On Windows, the U6 uses the UD driver with LJControlPanel, LJLogUD and LJStreamUD. LabJack’s U6 datasheet says the UD driver, LJControlPanel and LJSelfUpgrade are not available on macOS or Linux, and LabJack has no GUI app for the U6 there. The native option is the Exodriver, a low-level USB driver, and LabJackPython builds on it, so a Mac user can script a U6 in Python but cannot run LabJack’s logging tools. Kipling and LJM, LabJack’s cross-platform software, support only T-series and Digit devices.

The T7 as a replacement

DAQAtlas, which is in development, uses LJM for LabJack hardware, so it supports the T4, T7 and T8 but not the U6. LabJack recommends the T7 over the U6. It covers the same four input ranges with a 100 kS/s stream rate, Ethernet and LJM support on all three operating systems. LabJack T7 on a Mac covers that setup.

Questions

Does the LabJack U6 work on macOS?

Only through the Exodriver, LabJack’s low-level USB driver for macOS and Linux, usually with LabJackPython. The UD driver and LabJack’s GUI apps for the U6 are Windows only.

Does DAQAtlas support the LabJack U6?

No. DAQAtlas, which is in development, uses LJM for LabJack devices, and the U6 uses the UD driver and Exodriver instead. The T7 is the closest supported model.

Is the U6 discontinued?

No. LabJack lists the U6 as active with an expected end of life around 2030, and recommends the T7 for new designs.
